Ovฤ“a Protocols ยท Imbalanced Hormone Edition

Your hormones aren't working against you.

"Tired of feeling off every month?"

Evidence-based supplement support for estrogen dominance, low progesterone, androgen excess, and the adrenal-thyroid-cycle connection. Every recommendation includes the clinical rationale, dosage guidance, and third-party tested brand options, drawn from 19 years of clinical experience and a Holistic Health Coaching certification.

โš  Educational resource only. Not medical advice. All supplementation should be discussed with your licensed healthcare provider before beginning. This protocol does not replace clinical care or diagnosis.

Ovฤ“a Happy Hormones hero photo

If your labs say normal
but your body says otherwise.

This protocol was built for exactly that gap. It is organised by root cause โ€” not just symptom โ€” so you can identify what is actually driving your specific hormonal picture and address it directly. "You do not need to overhaul your entire life to support your hormones. You need to know which lever to pull โ€” and pull it consistently."

01
Identify your dominant patternMost women recognise themselves in one or two sections more strongly than the others.
02
Form and quality matterBrands are selected for bioavailability, purity, and third-party testing.
03
Give each addition 8โ€“12 weeksHormonal shifts happen across cycles, not days.
04
Educational โ€” not a lab replacementPair this with hormone testing and a clinical conversation.

Section 01 ยท Foundation

Before anything else,
build the base.

"I've been taking random supplements for years. Where do I actually begin?"

These are the non-negotiables every other recommendation in this protocol depends on.

Methylated Multivitamin
methylfolate ยท active B12 ยท P-5-P

The nutritional backbone every hormone protocol depends on

Why it matters

Your body uses methylated B vitamins to activate, convert, and clear hormones, including estrogen. A methylated formula delivers the active forms directly.

What to look for

Look for "L-methylfolate," "methylcobalamin," and "P-5-P." Choose iron-free unless labs confirm low iron.

Evidence: Active B vitamins support estrogen detoxification pathways (Lamers et al., 2006).

Vitamin D3 + K2
2000โ€“5000 IU daily

The hormone-adjacent vitamin most women are deficient in

Why it matters

Vitamin D functions more like a hormone โ€” influencing ovarian function, supporting progesterone production. K2 directs calcium to bone, not soft tissue.

Dosage

2000โ€“5000 IU D3 daily with K2 (90โ€“180mcg), with a fat-containing meal. Retest after 8โ€“12 weeks.

Evidence: Vitamin D deficiency linked to menstrual irregularity (Jukic et al., 2015).
Favorite brandsThorne Vitamin D/K2 Liquid View โ†’

Magnesium Glycinate
300โ€“400mg daily

The calming mineral behind better sleep and fewer cramps

Why it matters

Required for 300+ enzymatic processes including progesterone receptor sensitivity and cortisol regulation. Glycinate absorbs far better than oxide.

Dosage

300โ€“400mg in the evening, 1โ€“2 hours before bed.

Evidence: Improved PMS symptoms including cramping and sleep quality (Facchinetti et al., 1991).
Favorite brandsThorne Magnesium Bisglycinate View โ†’

Section 02 ยท Estrogen Dominance

When estrogen overstays
its welcome.

"Tender breasts, heavy cycles, bloating โ€” is my estrogen too high?"

Often points to estrogen running high relative to progesterone โ€” usually because it isn't clearing efficiently, not overproduction.

DIM (Diindolylmethane)
100โ€“200mg daily

Supports the liver's ability to metabolise estrogen toward its gentler pathway

Why it matters

Found in cruciferous vegetables; supports Phase I liver detox of estrogen toward the protective 2-hydroxyestrone pathway.

Dosage

100โ€“200mg daily with food. Start low.

Evidence: Shifted estrogen metabolites toward protective pathway (Michnovicz, 1997).
Favorite brandsThorne DIM View โ†’

Calcium D-Glucarate
500โ€“1000mg daily

Prevents used estrogen from being reabsorbed

Why it matters

Inhibits beta-glucuronidase, supporting the final clearance step DIM begins.

Dosage

500โ€“1000mg daily, paired with DIM.

Evidence: Reduced beta-glucuronidase activity (Walaszek et al., 1996).
Favorite brandsThorne Calcium D-Glucarate View โ†’

Milk Thistle (Silymarin)
150โ€“300mg daily

Supports the liver doing the heavy lifting behind clearance

Why it matters

Silymarin has hepatoprotective properties supporting overall detox capacity.

Dosage

150โ€“300mg standardised extract daily with food.

Clinical cautionDiscuss DIM/Calcium D-Glucarate with your provider if on hormonal birth control, HRT, or pregnant. Even moderate alcohol elevates circulating estrogen.
Evidence: Hepatoprotective/antioxidant effects (Abenavoli et al., 2010).

Section 03 ยท Low Progesterone

When the calm hormone
doesn't show up enough.

"Short cycles, spotting, anxiety before my period."

Classic signature of a luteal phase not getting enough progesterone support.

Vitex (Chasteberry)
400โ€“500mg daily

One of the most researched herbs for supporting progesterone production

Why it matters

Works at the pituitary level to support healthy LH output, supporting natural progesterone production.

Dosage

400โ€“500mg each morning; requires 8โ€“12 weeks. Not appropriate during pregnancy or hormonal contraception.

Clinical cautionVitex influences pituitary hormone signaling โ€” the same system hormonal contraception overrides. Discuss with your provider if on a hormonal IUD or the pill.
Evidence: Improved luteal phase length and PMS symptoms (Schellenberg, 2001).
Favorite brandsThorne Vitex Extract View โ†’

Vitamin B6 (P-5-P)
50โ€“100mg daily

Supports progesterone production and eases luteal-phase irritability

Why it matters

Active B6 is a cofactor in progesterone synthesis and dopamine production.

Dosage

50โ€“100mg P-5-P daily, morning. Doses above 100mg long-term should be discussed with a provider.

Evidence: Reduced PMS symptom severity (Wyatt et al., 1999).

Section 04 ยท Androgen Excess

When testosterone runs
louder than it should.

"Jawline acne, unwanted facial hair, scalp thinning."

Points toward elevated androgens โ€” often tied to insulin resistance.

Spearmint Extract & Tea
2 cups tea or 500mg daily

A well-researched, gentle option for lowering elevated androgens

Why it matters

Anti-androgenic properties, modestly reducing free testosterone.

Dosage

Two cups tea daily, or 500mg extract, for 8โ€“12 weeks.

Evidence: Reduced free/total testosterone in PCOS-related hirsutism (Akdogan et al., 2007).

Zinc Picolinate
25โ€“30mg daily

One of the most evidence-backed minerals for hormonal acne

Why it matters

Regulates 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme converting testosterone to DHT.

Dosage

25โ€“30mg daily with food. Avoid exceeding 40mg long-term without guidance.

Evidence: Improved inflammatory acne lesions (Dreno et al., 2001).

Myo-Inositol
2โ€“4g daily, 40:1 ratio

Improves insulin sensitivity at the root of elevated androgens

Why it matters

Excess insulin stimulates ovaries to produce more testosterone; myo-inositol improves insulin sensitivity.

Dosage

2โ€“4g daily, split into two doses.

Evidence: Improved insulin sensitivity, reduced free testosterone (Unfer et al., 2017).
Favorite brandsThorne Myo-Inositol View โ†’

Section 05 ยท Adrenal-Cortisol Connection

When stress quietly
steals from progesterone.

"My symptoms get worse when I'm stressed."

Progesterone and cortisol share an upstream building block โ€” the "pregnenolone steal."

Ashwagandha (KSM-66)
300โ€“600mg daily

The most researched adaptogen for lowering cortisol

Why it matters

Helps the stress response return to baseline, protecting resources otherwise diverted from progesterone production.

Dosage

300โ€“600mg KSM-66 daily with food.

Evidence: Reduced serum cortisol and stress scores (Chandrasekhar et al., 2012).
Favorite brandsThorne Ashwagandha View โ†’

Phosphatidylserine
100โ€“300mg daily

Blunts the cortisol spike tied to chronic stress and poor sleep

Why it matters

Helps regulate the HPA axis, blunting exaggerated cortisol response to stress.

Dosage

100โ€“300mg daily, often in the evening.

Clinical cautionNo adaptogen fully offsets a chronically overloaded nervous system. These work best alongside real changes to your stress load.
Evidence: Blunted ACTH/cortisol response to stress (Monteleone et al., 1992).

Section 06 ยท Thyroid-Cycle Connection

The hormone gland
most women never test.

"My thyroid labs came back 'normal' but I still feel off."

Even mild subclinical thyroid dysfunction can disrupt ovulation and worsen every symptom in this protocol.

Selenium
100โ€“200mcg daily

Essential for converting thyroid hormone into its active form

Why it matters

Cofactor for the enzyme converting T4 into active T3.

Dosage

100โ€“200mcg daily. Avoid exceeding 400mcg long-term.

Evidence: Improved thyroid antibody levels and T4-to-T3 conversion (Negro et al., 2007).

Iodine (Low-Dose)
150โ€“200mcg โ€” provider guidance

An essential building block requiring a cautious, individualised approach

Why it matters

Required raw material for thyroid hormone; both too little and too much can disrupt function.

Important note

Discuss with your provider, ideally alongside thyroid antibody testing (TPO, TgAb).

Evidence: Excess supplementation can worsen autoimmune thyroiditis (Leung & Braverman, 2014).

Section 07 ยท Gut & Liver Clearance

The clearance system
behind every other section.

"I bloat constantly and can't shake the feeling my body isn't clearing what it should."

Every hormone discussed is eventually metabolised by the liver and eliminated through the gut.

Broad-Spectrum Probiotic
25โ€“50 billion CFU daily

Supports the "estrobolome" โ€” the gut bacteria clearing used estrogen

Why it matters

Estrobolome bacteria determine whether processed estrogen is excreted or reabsorbed.

Dosage

25โ€“50 billion CFU daily, multi-strain, with a meal.

Evidence: Gut microbiome directly influences estrogen reabsorption (Baker et al., 2017).

Fiber Blend (Psyllium Husk)
1โ€“2 tbsp daily

The simplest, most overlooked tool for keeping used hormones moving out

Why it matters

Fiber binds used estrogen in the gut, supporting elimination rather than reabsorption.

Dosage

1โ€“2 tbsp ground flaxseed or psyllium husk daily.

Evidence: Favorable estrogen metabolite profiles (Phipps et al., 1993).

Section 08 ยท Bonus โ€” Period-Balancing Support

Not a substitute for the protocol โ€”
a companion to it.

"Is there anything gentle just for the cramping and bloating itself?"

A gentle, daily-ritual addition many women find genuinely supportive alongside the core protocol.

Period-Balancing Tea
organic herbal tea blend

A gentle, food-based ritual for cramping, bloating, and cycle discomfort

Why it matters

Traditional cycle-supportive herbs; a simple, low-risk daily ritual, not a substitute for root-cause work above.

How to use it

Steep 1 tea bag 5โ€“10 minutes. Most supportive in the luteal phase or during the period.

Evidence: Traditional use; formal RCT evidence limited โ€” treat as comfort-ritual, not root-cause.

Section 09 ยท Amenorrhea & the HPO Axis

When your period
stops showing up at all.

"My period disappeared and no one connected it to my stress, exercise, or eating."

Stressors such as disordered eating, weight loss, excessive exercise, or severe physical or psychological stress can influence the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis โ€” the hormone communication network regulating the reproductive process. This can lead to primary or secondary amenorrhea, sometimes called Functional Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (FHA), commonly driven by psychological stress, excessive exercise, and a sustained energy deficit. If your period has stopped, the most useful next step is a conversation with a provider who can evaluate the whole picture โ€” not a supplement alone.

Ashwagandha (KSM-66)
300โ€“600mg daily

Supports a calmer HPA axis response, indirectly supporting HPO axis signalling

Why it matters

Chronic stress activation competes with hypothalamus/pituitary signalling for ovarian communication. See Section 05 for full detail.

Dosage

300โ€“600mg KSM-66 daily. See Section 05 for caution notes.

Evidence: Reduced serum cortisol and stress scores (Chandrasekhar et al., 2012).

Vitex (Chasteberry)
400โ€“500mg daily

Supports pituitary-driven hormone signalling once the underlying stressor is addressed

Why it matters

Works at the pituitary level; in FHA, addressing the energy deficit or stress driving amenorrhea remains the primary intervention. See Section 03.

Dosage

400โ€“500mg each morning. See Section 03 for caution notes.

Evidence: Improved luteal phase length (Schellenberg, 2001).

Ginger Tea
organic ginger root tea

A gentle, traditional addition for cycle comfort while the root cause is addressed

Why it matters

Traditional use for menstrual comfort; a low-risk daily ritual, not a treatment for HPO axis disruption.

How to use it

Steep fresh or bagged ginger tea daily.

Clinical cautionIf your period has stopped for three months or more, or disordered eating, excessive exercise, or a significant energy deficit may be contributing, please talk with a healthcare provider. Educational only โ€” not a replacement for clinical evaluation.
Evidence: Traditional use for menstrual comfort; not a substitute for addressing FHA drivers.

Section 10 ยท Holistic Lifestyle Swaps

What's touching your skin
matters too.

"Could something in my everyday products be affecting my hormones?"

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals — found in plastics, synthetic fragrance and heavily processed foods — can mimic or interfere with your natural hormones, and exposure adds up across a day. You don't need to overhaul your home overnight: start with one swap, make it a habit, then add the next.

Plastics & Heat
Kitchen & on-the-go

Heat is what turns plastic from a container into an ingredient.

Swap this

Microwaving or reheating food in plastic containers, drinking from plastic water bottles left in a warm car, and hot to-go meals or coffee in styrofoam or plastic-lined cups.

Try instead

Glass or ceramic for reheating, stainless steel or glass water bottles, and transferring takeout to a real plate as soon as you get home. Bring your own mug for coffee to-go.

Why it matters: Heat, fat and acidity increase how much BPA, phthalates and styrene migrate from plastic into food and drinks. "BPA-free" isn't always a fix — common replacements like BPS and BPF behave similarly in the body.
What You Wear
Clothing & footwear

Your skin is your largest organ — and it's in contact with fabric all day.

Swap this

Living in synthetic athletic wear (polyester, nylon, spandex) well beyond your workout, and wearing all-plastic footwear such as Crocs or foam slides as everyday shoes.

Try instead

Change out of sweaty workout clothes soon after training, choose cotton, linen, wool or bamboo for everyday wear, and rotate in leather, cork or natural-fiber shoes.

Why it matters: Synthetic fabrics shed microplastics, and independent testing has found BPA in some sports bras and athletic shirts. Heat and sweat increase skin contact — the goal is less time in plastic, not perfection.
"Natural Flavor"
Food, sauces & drinks

The simpler the ingredient list, the better.

Swap this

Packaged foods, sauces, dressings and flavored coffee drinks to-go that list "natural flavor" or "natural flavors" on the label.

Try instead

Short, recognizable ingredient lists. Flavor with real herbs, spices, citrus and vanilla, and order coffee with simple add-ins you can name (milk, cinnamon, real maple or honey).

Why it matters: "Natural flavor" is a single label term that can cover a blend of many undisclosed ingredients — including solvents, preservatives and carriers. You can't know what you're getting, which is reason enough to choose foods that tell you.
Fragrance & Scents
Home & body

Today nearly everything is scented — even sports mouthguards.

Swap this

Products that list "fragrance," "parfum" or "aroma": perfume, body wash, lotion, deodorant, laundry detergent, dryer sheets, candles, air fresheners, and scented or flavored sports gear.

Try instead

Fragrance-free (not just "unscented," which can contain masking fragrance) personal care and laundry products, unscented mouthguards, and essential oils used sparingly in place of synthetic scents.

Why it matters: "Fragrance" can legally hide dozens of undisclosed chemicals, often including phthalates — well-studied endocrine disruptors that can mimic or interfere with hormones like estrogen. Fewer scents means less cumulative exposure.
Your First Swaps
Start here

Small, consistent changes beat a perfect overhaul.

This week

Stop heating food in plastic — reheat in glass or on the stove. Swap your plastic water bottle for glass or stainless steel, and bring your own mug for coffee to-go.

This month

Replace your most-used scented products (body wash, deodorant, laundry detergent) with fragrance-free versions as they run out, and start checking labels for "natural flavor."

Why it matters: Your liver and gut (Section 07) clear hormones and the chemicals that mimic them. Lowering the daily load lets those pathways do their job — and makes the supplements in this guide work with you, not against the tide.

"Every supplement here is chosen because the evidence supports it โ€” not because the wellness industry sells it."
